NEW HAVEN, CT – New Haven officials have spent nearly $4,000 on uniforms for the receptionists in the mayor’s office at a time when the city is facing multi-million dollar budget deficits.
Funds were used from the Fire Department in order to secure a better price with a vendor, the mayor’s office told the New Haven Register. Funds from the mayor’s office would be moved back into the fire department budget.
The Register found that some of the same uniform items sold online were for less than what the city paid the vendor. To sign up for New Haven breaking news alerts and more, click here.
Three members of the mayor’s receptionist office received between $1,279 and $1,401 worth of clothing, which is more than the fire department’s $540 allotment per firefighter, according to WTNH.
New Haven recently had its credit rating dropped by two agencies as both the city and Board of Education face multi-million dollar budget deficits.
Alder Steve Winter told WTNH that the city shouldn’t be spending money it doesn’t have on non-essential things.
